Have you always dreamed of starting your own business, but you’re not sure how to get started?
You’re not alone!
There are plenty of people who’ve had the idea to start their store, but never took the leap of faith into entrepreneurship because they weren’t sure how to start.

If you’re interested in starting an online store and setting up shop online.
Here are some tips on how to do so and earn money through e-commerce sales and Amazon affiliate marketing.
Get Out There
Getting started with your online store can be overwhelming.
Luckily, there are ways to get started without spending too much time or money.
First of all, you need a domain name that’s relevant to your business (if you haven’t picked one already). You can buy a domain from places like GoDaddy for about $10/year.
After that, it comes down to what kind of e-commerce platform you want to use for building your site—and as with most things in life, there are plenty of options.
Shopify is a great place to start if you want tools designed specifically for starting an online store: they even have free templates that give you great options while keeping costs low. For example, you could go with their standard plan which costs just $9 per month and gives you access to basic features like product management, inventory tracking, payment processing, and more.
The best part?
They offer a 14-day free trial so you can test out their service before paying anything at all. Another option is BigCommerce which offers similar functionality but has slightly different pricing ($29-$149 per month depending on how many products you sell).
And then there’s Woo-Commerce which offers a completely open-source solution built on WordPress – also completely free!
If none of those fit your needs perfectly, don’t worry – there are lots of other options out there for creating an e-commerce store.
But getting started doesn’t have to be hard!
Choose Your Platform
You have many options when it comes to choosing your platform: You can create your website from scratch, or you can sign up for a free platform like Shopify.
If you decide to go with Shopify, you’ll be in good company—many entrepreneurs choose it for their online stores because of its impressive ease of use, the wealth of free apps and themes, 24/7 customer support, and simple integrations with other services.
It’s also worth noting that if you already have a website with traffic (and don’t want to mess with the coding on Shopify), you can use online shopping integration plugins for popular platforms like WordPress.
There are dozens of great options out there, so make sure you do some research before making your decision.
The right platform is important!
Choose Your Niche
Whether you’re looking to start a new side hustle or turn your online store into a career, there are a few things you need to consider.
First, do you have a passion for what you’re selling?
If so, that’s a great place to start.
Second, do you have special expertise in that niche?
This can be anything from being able to write well about something due to experience or just having a good taste (aka an eye for style).
Third, what skills do you already have that would help support your own business?
There are plenty of apps and software programs out there on virtually every topic. A little bit of research can go a long way!
Finally, how long do you think it will take before you begin seeing some profit?
Do you want to make money right away or build up a customer base first?
Do you want to get paid by check, PayPal, or direct deposit?
All of these questions should factor into your decision-making process when choosing which product(s) to sell.
Once you’ve answered them all, then it’s time to get started!
Choose Your Product
Before you can start your store, you need to figure out what products you want to sell. Are there any items you already use that others could benefit from as well?
If so, there’s a good chance it would make a good product to sell online. Are there any unique events or celebrations coming up soon? Maybe now is a great time to create a DIY decoration guide that would appeal to people who are planning to throw parties in that season or theme.
Or maybe something in your everyday life could be improved by creating a DIY guide on how to do it better, such as instructions on how not to waste food when cooking or cleaning supplies that are better for indoor air quality.
Do some research into what types of products are best sold online, but don’t let that limit your creativity!
You never know where inspiration will come from. Once you’ve decided on a product idea, move on to step two.
Great, you’ve picked a product you think people would be interested in purchasing through your new online business.
The next step is to do market research on similar successful products and find out why they were successful – did they offer convenience over other options?
Did they meet a need not being fulfilled by competitors?
Were they highly specialized but targeting niche audiences willing to pay more than typical consumers because of those specializations?
Once you know what made similar products popular with consumers, start brainstorming ways you can capitalize on these factors without making major changes to your original concept for the product.
Remember: although becoming successful starts with hard work and diligence, getting lucky sometimes really does happen!
Promote, Promote, Promote
Once you’ve made your business plan, it’s time to move on to promotion.
One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is launching their product or service before they are ready. You may be sitting on a great idea, but if no one knows about it, then how do you expect to sell it?
Start building your platform well in advance of when you plan to launch so that when your product does hit shelves you’ll have a built-in audience. Think about how you’re going to promote yourself—then do it! This means creating a website with all of your information, social media profiles, an email list—anything and everything that could allow people interested in what you’re selling to get in touch with you.
And don’t forget to keep promoting after you launch too. There will always be new customers who haven’t heard about you yet, so don’t slack off once your store goes live.
Be Prepared
If you want to get into e-commerce, be prepared to put in a lot of time and effort.
First off, no matter what anyone tells you, it’s not as easy as selling things on Amazon or eBay. You need to build trust among your customers so they buy from you instead of your competitors; that takes a long time and requires a real dedication to providing exceptional service.
Also know that no matter how good your product is, if it doesn’t have adequate supply or demand, people won’t buy from you—even if there are millions of them just one click away. Finally, once you do start making sales, keep in mind that all those transactions take place offline.
That means handling customer support, returns, and refunds by yourself. There’s nothing wrong with being an online business owner, but don’t expect it to be a walk in the park.
